Man United Edge Liverpool 3-2 To Secure UCL Qualification

Manchester United defeated Liverpool 3-2 at Old Trafford to secure their spot in the UEFA Champions League for the upcoming season.
Sunday Telegraph reports that Kobbie Mainoo scored the game-winning goal, helping the Red Devils gain a six-point lead over their fierce rivals and achieve their first Premier League double over Liverpool in ten years.

Returning from injury, Matheus Cunha scored the first goal for United after just eight minutes into the match. Cunha scored his ninth goal of the year despite a clever deflection off Alexis Mac Allister.

After Freddie Woodman fumbled at a low Bruno Fernandes cross in the 14th minute, Benjamin Sesko bundled the ball into the net to double Man United’s lead.

Fernandes wanted that to be his 20th Premier League assist of the season to tie the records set by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne, but Woodman’s touch took that away.

Liverpool appeared to have no chance of winning, but Arne Slot’s halftime team talk appeared to have a significant impact, as the Reds quickly doubled to reverse the tide of the match after the break.

On minute 47, Dominik Szoboszlai made it 2-1 after intercepting a midfield ball from Amad Diallo. He then charged forward, dribbling all the way into the United box before nutmegging Diogo Dalot to hit the bottom corner.

Nine minutes later, Cody Gakpo took advantage of a terrible Senne Lammens mistake to tie the score at 2-2. Szoboszlai squared to Gakpo for an open goal after Mac Allister pounced on Lammens’ clumsy ball.

Since May 1984, United had not lost a home top-flight game when leading at the interval, and as Liverpool surged for victory, that long-standing streak appeared in jeopardy.

However, Mainoo scored the game-winning goal on minute 78, cushioning into the bottom left with remarkable poise when Mac Allister could only clear as far as the box’s edge, giving the hosts the final laugh.
