The Bauchi State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has decried worsening insecurity and economic hardship in the country, blaming recent Federal Government policies for deepening poverty and undermining decent work.
The State NLC Chairperson, Comrade Dauda M. Shuaibu, stated this during the 2026 May Day celebration at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium on Friday in Bauchi, where he described the current economic climate as “unfavourable to the working class and citizens.”
He criticised the removal of fuel subsidy, increase in electricity tariffs, and floating of the naira, saying the policies had destabilised the economy and worsened the cost of living.
Shuaibu also expressed concern over rising insecurity across northern Nigeria, noting that killings, kidnappings, and banditry had continued unabated.
According to him, the government must prioritise the protection of lives and property, stressing that security remains a constitutional responsibility.
He further alleged uneven development across the country, claiming that some regions receive more attention in terms of infrastructure and funding than others.
The labour leader warned that small and medium enterprises were collapsing due to a lack of affordable electricity, thereby threatening jobs and economic stability.
Despite his criticism of federal policies, Shuaibu commended the Bauchi State Government for its efforts in maintaining relative peace and supporting workers through various welfare initiatives.
He called for collective action among stakeholders to tackle insecurity and poverty, noting that both challenges remain major obstacles to decent work and national development.
This year’s celebration witnessed a large turnout from both public and private MDAs and companies, as well as the presentation of awards to the best mobilisation, continuity, and organisation, respectively.
