The Lagos State Government has announced a landmark achievement following the approval of Phase 1A of the Lagos Green Line Rail Project by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made this known via his social media handle on Friday on the occasion of May Day, expressing deep appreciation for the Federal Government’s backing, while describing the approval as a transformative step toward modernising transportation across Nigeria’s commercial capital.

The Green Line rail project, spanning approximately 68 kilometres, will connect Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone, creating a vital transport corridor through some of Lagos’ busiest and fastest-growing districts. Key stops along the route will include Victoria Island, Ajah, and other strategic locations within the Lekki axis.

Designed to serve an estimated 500,000 passengers daily at inception, with the capacity to scale up to one million commuters over time, the rail line is expected to significantly ease the chronic traffic congestion that has long defined movement within the city.

Transport officials note that the system will be capable of moving up to 35,000 passengers per hour in each direction, drastically reducing travel time and taking pressure off Lagos’ overstretched road network.

Beyond easing mobility, the Green Line is projected to stimulate economic growth, open up new business opportunities, and enhance the overall quality of life for millions of residents.

The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a world-class rail system, emphasising that the project aligns with its broader vision of building a more efficient, accessible, and globally competitive megacity.

With federal backing now secured, attention is expected to shift to implementation, as Lagos moves closer to redefining urban transportation in West Africa.
