Zenith Bank launches Côte d’Ivoire subsidiary in major expan

Zenith Bank Plc has officially announced the commencement of operations at its new Côte d’Ivoire subsidiary, marking a significant milestone in the group’s strategic push to dominate the Francophone West African financial landscape.

The official opening ceremony for the Abidjan-based headquarters is expected to host a high-profile gathering of regulators, diplomats, and business leaders from across the continent, according to a statement from the bank on Monday.

Commenting on the launch, the Group Managing Director/CEO of Zenith Bank, Adaora Umeoji, stated that the expansion is the realisation of a long-term vision to build a global African brand.

“From the very beginning, our Founder and Chairman, Jim Ovia CFR, set out to build a truly global brand with a strong presence across Africa and key international markets. The launch of Zenith Bank Côte d’Ivoire is a bold step in realising that vision,” Umeoji noted.

The new subsidiary, licensed by the Ministry of Finance and Budget of Côte d’Ivoire and regulated by the UMOA Banking Commission, is positioned as a gateway for cross-border trade. It will offer a suite of services, including corporate banking, trade finance, and structured financial solutions.

Umeoji emphasised that the bank’s entry into the West African Economic and Monetary Union is designed to create seamless connectivity for African enterprises.

“Opening a strategic corridor into Francophone West Africa reinforces our commitment to facilitating trade, investment, and enterprise growth across the continent. We remain focused on delivering world-class banking solutions that connect African businesses to global opportunities,” she added.

The Côte d’Ivoire operations will be led by Mr Cédric Tano, a seasoned banking executive with over two decades of experience. Speaking on the bank’s readiness to compete in the Ivorian market, Tano highlighted the bank’s customer-centric approach.

“Our focus is to showcase the Zenith brand as a customer-centric institution that combines global best practices with deep local insight. We are well-positioned to support businesses with innovative financing solutions and contribute meaningfully to the growth of the Ivorian economy,” Tano stated.

The Abidjan launch is part of a broader continental roadmap. Zenith Bank confirmed that it has already begun the process of entering the CEMAC (Central African Economic and Monetary Community) region, with Cameroon serving as the primary focal point for its next expansion phase.

Tano reiterated that the bank is entering the region at a pivotal moment of economic integration. “We are proud to establish Zenith Bank’s presence in Côte d’Ivoire at a time of strong economic growth and increasing regional integration. We aim to facilitate cross-border trade and contribute to the wider WAEMU region,” he concluded.

With a footprint already spanning the UK, China, UAE, France, and several African nations, Zenith Bank continues to leverage its robust capital base, having held the record for the highest Tier-1 capital in Nigeria for 16 consecutive years, to bridge African markets with global wealth.
