SAZU Faults Misleading Reports On Student Attack, Urges Media Responsibility

…Urges Media Responsibility

Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU) has criticised sections of the online media for circulating what it described as inaccurate reports regarding a recent attack on one of its students, warning that such misinformation could trigger unnecessary fear.

The university clarified that the victim, Maryam Yakeem, a 200-level student of Biology Education, was attacked by suspected phone snatchers outside the campus, contrary to claims that the incident occurred within the school premises.

In a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Auwal Hassan, the management stressed that there has been no recorded case of insecurity within the university’s campuses, attributing this to effective collaboration with security agencies.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Fatimah Tahir, reaffirmed the institution’s unwavering commitment to student and staff safety, noting that proactive measures, including engagement with law enforcement authorities, have strengthened campus security.

The management condemned the dissemination of unverified information, stating that it undermines journalistic ethics and could incite public anxiety.

Meanwhile, the university disclosed that its security chief and Dean of Student Affairs promptly visited the injured student in the hospital, confirming that she is in stable condition and receiving adequate care.

SAZU extended its sympathy to the victim and reassured the university community of continued efforts to safeguard lives and property.
