The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Tuesday looked into the books of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) under its factional National Chairman, Dr Abubakar Sadiq Gombe, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Commission Chairman, Prof Joash Amupitan disclosed this while speaking with journalists at the party’s National secretariat in Abuja following INEC’s verification exercise.
According to him, members of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), including state chairmen, participated fully in the process in collaboration with INEC officials.
“It was an eleven-member INEC team that came for the verification exercise at the SDP headquarters today (Tuesday).
“As you are aware, part of the requirements for the registration of a political party is that it must have a presence in at least two-thirds of the states of the federation.
“INEC came to verify the membership of the NEC, see them physically, and engage with them, as well as members of the National Working Committee,” he stated.
The National Chairman emphasised that the Supreme Court of Nigeria has, on several occasions, ruled that internal party disputes remain the affairs of the parties involved.
It would be recalled that Gombe assumed leadership of the opposition party after the Supreme Court dismissed INEC’s appeal.
