The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has declared that it has overcome its challenges and is now united as one big family.
PDP in a communique after a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting by faction loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, said it is not in distress, adding that the era of uncertainty is over.
The 108th NEC meeting, which was held at the PDP National Secretariat, was attended by Wike, former Secretary, Senator Adolphus Wabara-led Board of Trustees (BoT), Senator Mohammed Ahmed Makarfi, former Chairman of Northern Senators’ Forum, Senator Abdul Ningi, and Leader of Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives, Kingsley Chinda.
Wike had told the National Working Committee (NWC) to toe the line of reconciliation and bring back those who defected from the party.
“Chairman and your team, make sure you put up a strong committee that will still go ahead and talk to those who have defected, and whatever is due to them, they will still have it,” he advised.
According to him, most of them might have defected because of uncertainty, adding that those who left did so because they were not sure who would sign their nomination forms to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
“If I want to run an election, and I’m not sure who will sign my documents to be presented to INEC…most people will definitely find where they can get succour.
“But now, if you go and talk to them, I believe they will have a rethink and continue to support this party,” the minister stated. The NEC in the communique by the National Publicity Secretary, Haruna Mohammed Jungudo, called for reconciliation, collective responsibility in resolving internal issues through dialogue and adherence to party structures.
The meeting endorsed the party’s ongoing electronic membership registration (e-registration) to modernise its database, enhance transparency and boost grassroots participation.
According to the communique, the timetable and schedule for party primaries were adopted, as well as the fees for the Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms.
PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Abdulrahman Mohammed, boasted that the party has successfully navigated its internal challenges and is fully aligned with the provisions of the constitution, the Electoral Act, and other relevant guidelines as issued by INEC. Mohammed said the uncertainty in the PDP is now behind it, adding that the party is now in “the era of strategy, consolidation and electoral preparation.”
He assured that PDP will conduct transparent, credible and inclusive party primaries at all levels in strict compliance with the extant laws and democratic best practice.
