Van Dijk’s 100th-Minute Goal Seals Dramatic 2-1 Win For Liverpool

Liverpool claimed a dramatic 2-1 victory over Everton in a historic Merseyside derby, as Virgil van Dijk’s towering header deep into stoppage time secured all three points in the first clash at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The landmark encounter, the 248th meeting between the rivals, began at a frenetic pace, with Everton showing early intent.

Beto threatened twice in the opening stages, forcing a save from Giorgi Mamardashvili before missing a gilt-edged opportunity.

The hosts thought they had taken the lead through Iliman Ndiaye, only for VAR to rule the goal out for offside in the build-up.

Liverpool capitalised almost immediately. Mohamed Salah etched his name into history as the scorer of the first Merseyside derby goal at the new stadium, calmly finishing after being picked out by a precise pass from Cody Gakpo.

The Egyptian’s strike gave Arne Slot’s side a slender advantage heading into the break.

Everton responded strongly after half-time and found a deserved equaliser through Beto, who powered home from close range after an inviting delivery from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

David Moyes’ side continued to press, with their physicality and intensity unsettling Liverpool’s rhythm for much of the second period.

As the match edged into stoppage time, it appeared both sides would settle for a point. But in the 100th minute, Liverpool struck the decisive blow.

Virgil van Dijk rose above James Tarkowski to meet Dominik Szoboszlai’s corner, thundering a header into the net to silence the home crowd and spark wild celebrations among the travelling supporters.

The late winner underlined Liverpool’s reliance on their experienced stars, with Salah and Van Dijk delivering decisive moments at either end of the match.

The victory strengthens their push for a top-four finish, moving them closer to securing UEFA Champions League qualification with just five games remaining.

For Everton, the defeat was a bitter blow on an otherwise spirited performance in their new home. Despite matching their rivals for long spells, Moyes’ side were left to rue missed opportunities and a cruel ending to a fiercely contested derby.
