Ex-Kano Governor Shekarau Dumps PDP, Returns to APC

A former Governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau, has officially defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to rejoin the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Shekarau announced his return to the ruling party on Sunday at his residence in Kano, where party supporters gathered, saying his decision to go to the APC is the overwhelming one supported by everybody.

Speaking while accepting the positions of the Shura Council, his Elders committee, Board members, and all others that matter in his movement, the former governor disclosed that his decision followed extensive consultations with political associates and a thorough evaluation of available options.

“We have weighed all the options and arrived at this collective resolution. Do you all agree?” he asked while addressing loyalists, inviting dissenting views before finalising the move.

His defection came shortly after submitting a formal resignation letter to his ward chairman in Giginyu, Nassarawa Local Government Area of the state.

“Accept this letter please as notice of my resignation from my position as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with effect from today,” he wrote.

He also expressed appreciation to party leaders at the grassroots level, stating, “I thank you for being a good leader, and pray that Allah will continue to guide you in your stewardship.”

The letter was copied to both the state and local government leadership of the PDP, indicating that due process was followed in formalising his exit.

Shekarau’s return to the APC comes alongside that of Senator Bello Hayatu Gwarzo, who also left the PDP.

The development follows months of speculation linked to internal challenges within the opposition party. Earlier in April, Shekarau had hinted at a possible exit, describing the PDP as being weighed down by persistent crises.

He had also engaged in high-level political meetings, including discussions with Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Abba Yusuf, further fuelling speculation about his political direction.

Shekarau, who governed Kano State from 2003 to 2011 under the All Nigeria Peoples Party, has a long history of political realignments, having previously moved between major parties at different times in his career.
