SROL Backs Youth Empowerment Through Sports Tournament

Segilola Resources Operating Limited, operator of Nigeria’s first large-scale gold mine, has concluded the fifth edition of its annual football tournament in Osun State, bringing together host communities in a celebration of grassroots sports, unity, and youth development.

The competition, a key component of SROL’s corporate social responsibility initiatives, featured male and female teams competing in a three-day tournament that commenced on Thursday, March 26. The event culminated in finals and a community-centred closing ceremony held at the Iperindo Community Field on Saturday, March 28, according to a statement on Tuesday.

This year’s tournament saw teams compete for a total prize of N2,600,000. The winning male and female teams each received N500,000, while the second-place teams took home N400,000 each, and the third-place teams received N250,000 each.

In addition to team prizes, individual excellence was recognised through several award categories. The HSE Awards, aimed at promoting safety and discipline on and off the field, were presented to outstanding players in both categories, each receiving N50,000.

The highest goal scorers and Best Coach/Manager in both male and female categories were also recognised with ₦50,000 each.

Each team was comprised of SROL staff and members of the host communities. The male category featured four teams: Adrian FC, Sola FC, Segun FC, and Collins FC, while the female category comprised Aderinokun FC, Chris FC, Alf FC, and Adeoye FC.

SROL CEO, Mr Segun Lawson, officially kicked off the tournament with a display of ball skills and a ceremonial kick that set the tone for the event. He noted that the tournament is one of the ways SROL continues to strengthen its relationships with host communities and foster integration.

Through a series of matches, including penalty shootouts and decisive goals, the tournament progressed to the finals between Collins FC and Adrian FC in the male category, and Adeoye FC and Alf FC in the female category. Collins FC emerged as the winners in the male category, scoring four goals against their opponents’ two goals, while Adeoye FC were victorious in the female category, scoring five goals against their opponents’ three goals.

Owoeye Sikemi, captain of the winning female team (Team Adeoye), expressed joy at the win, saying, “This competition gave women and men in the community an opportunity to not just compete for prizes but to display our talent and shine, and for that I am deeply grateful to Segilola Resources.”

Adeshola Temitope, captain of the winning male team (Team Collins), said, “This competition is an investment in the youth, our talent, and ultimately our futures. We appreciate SROL for creating a platform that brings our community together and allows talents like ours to be seen.”

Speaking on this year’s competition, the Deputy General Manager/Operations Manager, SROL, Olusola Olusomidomo, highlighted the company’s vision, stating, “At SROL, we see sports as a powerful tool for youth development and community transformation. This tournament is about creating opportunities, nurturing talent, and inspiring young people to believe in their potential. We remain committed to investing in initiatives like this that empower the youth, strengthen community bonds, and contribute to sustainable development across our host communities.”

As the operator of Nigeria’s first large-scale gold mine, SROL continues to drive community impact through targeted initiatives that expand opportunities and support local talent.
