I’ve No Rift With Makinde, Olubadan, Says Alaafin

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade 1, has dismissed insinuations of rifts with Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja (Arusa 1), describing his relationship with both leaders as cordial.

The monarch made this clarification on Tuesday while speaking with journalists in Oyo Town.

According to him, Irrespective of public perception about him and the royal stool, any issues, if they arise, would be addressed privately. “I have nothing against the government. The governor has been very nice. If there is anything, I do meet him one-on-one,” he said.

While talking about his recent absence at some state functions like the “Oyo @50, the Alaafin said it was due to health challenges, noting that he had been indisposed for some time.

“There is no form of misunderstanding anyway. I have a good relationship with my governor. I have been indisposed for some time now. If there is any function, I will attend,” he said.

The monarch also debunked rumours of strained relations with the Olubadan, insisting that both of them maintain mutual respect and understanding. “My relationship with the Olubadan is cordial. Some people lie online to join the popular bandwagon. There is no misunderstanding,” he said.

The monarch particularly recalled his encounter with the Olubadan at a function in Ibadan, explaining that he had extended a handshake which the Olubadan did not initially acknowledge, but later clarified that it was unintentional.

“I extended my hand to him, but he later explained that he did not see it. I don’t see it as an offence. After that incident, he called me, and we later met again at Aso Rock, and during an Iftar. There is no misunderstanding between us,” he said.

The Alaafin nevertheless blamed the spread of false narratives about him on bloggers and individuals who were seeking attention, noting that such developments are part of the realities of occupying a revered traditional stool.

“People are peddling rumours about me because of the throne. Bloggers create problems where there are none. It is part of the job,” he said.

The monarch also expressed appreciation to members of the media for their consistent support of the palace, describing journalists as partners in progress.

He disclosed that preparations were underway for his upcoming birthday on July 18, during which some individuals would be conferred with chieftaincy titles.

Speaking on his activities within one year of his installation, Oba Owoade revealed that he inaugurated a land dispute committee, which has been recording tremendous successes, while plans were in motion to construct a civic centre, as well as a community centre, which has gulped about N700m.

While revealing that renovation works were also ongoing at the palace as part of efforts to preserve its heritage and improve its infrastructure, the monarch reiterated his commitment to peace, unity, and development of Oyo Town, urging the public to disregard unfounded rumours but support traditional institutions.
