The Zamfara State chapter of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), which was scheduled to hold on Saturday, has been suspended until further notice, as some political parties expressed dissatisfaction with the screening process, which affected their eligibility to participate.
The Chairman of the Electoral Committee and the national Secretary of IPAC, Dr Umar Muhammad, who made this known, said the ambitions of some candidates in their political parties could not be entertained following sanctions laid against the national leadership of their respective parties by courts’ orders and the INEC national body.
The parties affected were the African Democratic Party (ADC), the Youth Party (YP) and the Labour Party (LP), whose national leadership was suspended by the court; some had issues with INEC.
He added that the eligibility of a candidate on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remained challenged by the other parties over the recent defection by the Zamfara State leadership of the PDP, which disqualified him in the IPAC election.
The directly affected members of the parties, alongside others, had abruptly interrupted the process of the election as they felt they could not manage their impulses that led to physical fights with some members of the Electoral Committee.
As the situation worsened, the Electoral Committee left, leaving the participants with the impression to come up with a solution that would address the crisis for the election to be held amicably without having any party feeling being lopsided.
Briefing newsmen, the Chairman of the IPAC electoral committee, Dr Umar Muhammad, declared the election suspended till further notice, as the committee has to return to the national headquarters to report the situation before scheduling for another date.
