Wizkid’s ‘Essence’ Deserves A Grammy- Bayo Onanuga


The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information & Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has lauded the global success and critical acclaim of  Nigerian Afrobeats singer, Ayodeji Balogun, better known as Wizkid’ hit single with Tems, “Essence”, following their Coachella 2026 performance.

Speaking on his verified X handle, Onanuga expressed his admiration for the song and said it wasn’t fair that the song was omitted from the Grammy Awards.

In response to viral video clips showing Wizkid and Tems joining Canadian pop star Justin Bieber on stage to perform the “Essence” remix at the iconic California music festival, Onanuga tweeted support for the song’s legacy.

Onanuga wrote, “Still wondering why Essence did not win a Grammy. Great song, great rhythm!”

“Essence”, released in 2020, marked a significant milestone for Afrobeats and Nigerian music globally.

The song’s remix, featuring Justin Bieber, reached the top 10 of the US Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number nine.
