UNIDO hosts forum to advance AI adoption

The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation has announced hosting the inaugural Artificial Intelligence for Industry and Manufacturing Global Forum, spotlighting the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in industry and manufacturing.

The event held recently at the Vienna International Centre, brought together global leaders, policymakers, academics, and industry experts to discuss best practices and strategies for bridging the digital divide and promoting sustainable development through AI.

According to UNIDO, the forum, a landmark event for the Global Alliance on Artificial Intelligence for Industry and Manufacturing, featured live-streamed panels, virtual sessions, and business matchmaking opportunities. Discussions covered critical topics such as AI governance, global standards, integration in manufacturing processes, and the environmental implications of emerging technologies.

UNIDO Director-General, Gerd Müller, underscored AI’s role in addressing global challenges such as climate change and food security.

“AI and digital technologies offer tremendous potential to address global challenges. However, we must ensure access to these technologies is equitable to prevent further digital divides.

AIM Global plays a vital role in improving technology access for all,” Müller said.

Also, the International Atomic Energy Agency Director-General, Rafael Grossi, highlighted AI’s growing importance in industrial applications, particularly in the nuclear energy sector.

“AI is an indispensable tool for automation, machine learning, and operational improvements. Its potential remains largely untapped, with only 15 per cent of its applicability realised,” Grossi noted, emphasising IAEA’s support for AIM Global’s objectives.

On her part, Colombia’s Ambassador to UNIDO and Chair of the Group of 77 Vienna Chapter, Laura Savastano, stressed the importance of inclusive industrialisation for developing nations.

She called for greater international cooperation in technology transfer, financial aid, and infrastructure development.

“There is an urgent need to bridge the digital gap, empowering all nations to participate and benefit from the digital age,” she remarked.

“The forum’s collaborative approach highlighted the global commitment to leveraging AI for sustainable industrial development. It reinforced the necessity of partnerships among nations to ensure AI technologies contribute to a more equitable and sustainable future,” the statement partly read.
