The Government of the United Kingdom has announced a voluntary contribution of approximately CAD 2.2 million to the International Civil Aviation Organisation, reinforcing its commitment to aviation safety, environmental sustainability, and the strategic transformation of the UN agency.
According to a report by ICAO, the funding will support the safety and sustainability pillars of its Strategic Plan 2026–2050, which aims for “zero fatality and net zero emissions air connectivity for everyone, everywhere.” The UK’s latest donation is a strong demonstration of its continued support for this ambitious global aviation mission.
“The contribution announced today demonstrates the UK’s continued strong support for this mission,” ICAO stated.
Part of the funding will go toward establishing the ICAO Finvest Hub, a new initiative under the Assistance, Capacity-building, and Training for Sustainable Aviation Fuels Programme. The programme is central to ICAO’s efforts to unlock innovative financing tools for sustainable aviation fuel deployment worldwide.
“With ICAO analysis showing that SAF could deliver over half of the reductions needed to achieve net zero, this programme was created to unlock financing mechanisms for SAF deployment worldwide,” ICAO explained.
Beyond environmental goals, the UK’s contribution will also enhance global aviation safety oversight and provide targeted capacity-building support. This includes a special focus on improving aviation infrastructure and compliance in the North American, Central American, and Caribbean regions, especially among CARICOM states.
The donation will also help enable the digital and organisational transformation of the ICAO Secretariat, an essential component for effectively delivering the 2026–2050 Strategic Plan and improving the agency’s operational effectiveness.
“The funding will also enable the digital and organisational transformation of the Secretariat, which is key to the plan’s implementation,” the statement added.
