Transformer Fire Plunges Parts of Katsina into Darkness


Parts of the Katsina metropolis were thrown into darkness following a fire incident involving a 15 MVA power transformer at the IBB Way Injection Substation, the Kano Electricity Distribution Company has said.

In a public notice issued on Monday by the Head of Corporate Communication at KEDCO, Sani Bala Sani, the DisCo disclosed that the fire affected the 15 MVA TR3 power transformer at the IBB Way Injection Substation and occurred in the late hours of Sunday, January 4, 2026.

The electricity distribution company said the cause of the fire outbreak had yet to be determined, noting that its technical team had been deployed to the site to investigate the incident and assess the extent of the damage.

KEDCO explained that affected areas were isolated as a safety measure to protect lives and property, adding that the outage impacted several parts of Katsina metropolis.

The areas affected include Kofar Kaura, Government Reserved Area, Dandagoro, parts of Kofar Marusa, Janbango, Kano Road, and the surrounding environs.

While apologising to customers for the disruption, the company assured residents that safety and speedy restoration of the electricity supply remained a priority.

KEDCO said it regrets the inconvenience caused and assured customers that safety and timely restoration remain its topmost priority.

The notice read, “Kano Electricity Distribution Company regrets to inform its esteemed customers in Katsina of a fire incident involving a 15 MVA TR3 power transformer at IBB Way Injection Substation, which occurred in the late hours of yesterday, Sunday, 4th January 2026.

“The cause of the fire outbreak is yet to be ascertained. However, our technical team is currently on the ground to determine the cause of the incident, assess the extent of the damage, and work towards restoring the power supply in the shortest possible time.

“As a safety precaution, the affected areas have been isolated to protect lives and property. The outage affects parts of Katsina metropolis, including Kofar Kaura, GRA, Dandagoro, parts of Kofar Marusa, Janbango, Kano Road, and the surrounding environs.

“KEDCO regrets the inconvenience caused and assures customers that safety and timely restoration remain our topmost priority. Further updates will be provided as investigations and restoration efforts progress.”
