President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that his administration will not be distracted by criticisms from opposition parties, insisting that his government remains focused on repositioning Nigeria for economic recovery and sustainable development.
Speaking on Friday night at the national convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja, Tinubu acknowledged the role of opposition in a democracy but dismissed persistent criticisms as politically motivated.
“It is not easy to satisfy everyone, especially opposition politicians who are always looking for what to criticise, but we will not be deterred,” the President said.
He, however, stated the importance of a vibrant opposition, noting that credible dissent is essential for national growth and democratic consolidation.
On the amended Electoral Act, which has drawn criticism in some quarters, Tinubu defended the process leading to its passage, stating that the National Assembly subjected the legislation to rigorous scrutiny, including public hearings.
“It is public knowledge that the amendment process went through due legislative procedures before adoption. Our commitment remains to conduct credible elections and to unite the country,” he said.
Reflecting on his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, Tinubu admitted that the path to reform has been challenging but necessary.
“We knew the road would be tough, but no nation grows without trials. Since assuming office in 2023, we have remained focused on delivering for Nigerians,” he added.
The President expressed optimism about the country’s economic trajectory, citing improvements in the oil and gas sector and ongoing efforts to address electricity challenges.
“Our oil and gas sector is improving significantly. On power, we are working to increase generation capacity by an additional 1,500 megawatts,” he said.
Tinubu also spoke on inclusivity, pledging greater opportunities for young people and increased participation of women in governance.
“Young people are the future of this country, and we are committed to building a system that works for them. For women, we will take decisive steps to improve their representation in public service,” he stated.
Earlier, the convention adopted consensus as the mode of voting for party offices and ratified reports from ward, local government, state, and zonal congresses.
Government officials at the event also highlighted key achievements of the administration over the past three years and outlined expectations for the future.
In a solemn moment, Tinubu paid tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away a year after leaving office, describing him as a leader who served the nation with dedication.
The President also commended the Chairman of the National Convention Planning Committee, Aminu Bello Masari, for the successful organisation of the convention.
