Tinubu Clinches APC Presidential Ticket, Reflects On Campaign Promises

President Bola Tinubu on Sunday emerged as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 general election after securing a landslide victory in the party’s nationwide direct primary election held on Saturday, 23 May, 2026.

Tinubu polled over 10.9 million votes to defeat fellow aspirant Stanley Osifo, who secured 16,503 votes in the exercise conducted across the country.

The President was presented with the APC Certificate of Return by the party’s National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja following the nationwide collation of results.

Present at the event were the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu; the Vice President, Kashim Shettima; Senate President, Godswill Akpabio; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas; Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Hope Uzodimma; APC governors, lawmakers, and other senior party stakeholders.

In his acceptance speech, Tinubu expressed appreciation to APC governors who served as returning officers during the primary election, party stakeholders, and his wife for their support.

The President also reflected on some of the promises he made during the 2022 campaign and the progress recorded by his administration since assuming office.

He noted that his government established the student loan scheme to reduce financial barriers to higher education, revealing that over 1.5 million Nigerians have benefited from the initiative.

Tinubu further highlighted efforts made in the power sector, particularly through the Presidential Metering Initiative, which he said has delivered over 2.5 million electricity meters nationwide as part of efforts to reduce estimated billing.

“Though we are not there yet until we have 24-hour uninterrupted electricity, we moved away from wasteful subsidy and corrupt investment,” he said.

The President acknowledged that some reforms had come with sacrifices but recalled that Nigerians supported his ambition when he sought office in 2022.

“You changed the landscape looking at the figures with which you returned me elected as the party’s presidential candidate. Thank you all,” Tinubu added.

The APC primary victory officially positions Tinubu as the ruling party’s flagbearer for the 2027 presidential election.
