Sustainability Institute Inducts 296 Members

The Sustainability Professionals Institute of Nigeria has inducted 96 new members at its 2025 cohort induction ceremony, bringing its total membership to 296, a significant milestone in the institute’s six-year history.

The ceremony, held on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Victoria Island, Lagos, brought together sustainability professionals from across Nigeria, alongside institutional members such as Access Bank, ARM, Dangote Cement, First Bank, IHS Towers, Lotus Bank, Mainstream Energy Solutions, RusselSmith, and Seplat Energy.

Founded in August 2019, SPIN has grown into Nigeria’s leading professional body for sustainability practitioners. Its rapid growth underscores increasing interest in environmental, social, and governance principles across corporate and public sectors.

In her remarks, Vice President Ini Abimbola described the latest cohort as SPIN’s largest yet, noting that the addition of 96 professionals reflects the expanding influence of sustainability leadership in the country.

“Today we inducted 96 professionals into our institute, our largest cohort yet. This brings our total membership to 296, reflecting the growing influence of sustainability leadership in Nigeria,” said Abimbola.

“Our next milestone is attaining chartered status. This will strengthen our authority to standardise sustainability practices nationwide, institutionalise our frameworks across sectors, and amplify Nigeria’s leadership globally,” Abimbola added.

Delivering the keynote address titled ‘The Future of Sustainability in a Volatile Global System: Implications for Africa,’ a renowned expert in public administration and sustainability, ’Dr. Louis Meuleman, highlighted the shifting dynamics of global governance and the need for decentralised, localised solutions.

He encouraged inductees to champion authentic, context-driven sustainability strategies tailored to Africa’s unique challenges.

In a notable moment during the event, Chairman of the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority and Airtel Africa Foundation, Dr. Segun Ogunsanya, was conferred with an honorary fellowship in recognition of his outstanding contributions to sustainable development across the continent.

In his opening remarks, Ogunsanya stressed the vital intersection between sustainable investment and long-term economic growth.

Since its inception, SPIN has recorded several milestones, including its partnership with the UK’s Institute of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability, the rollout of comprehensive training programmes, and the recent formation of a Scientific Committee to drive thought leadership.
