Student dies after 162 frog jumps in Ogun

There was tension in Imeko Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State as a student, identified as Ariyo Monday, was reported dead after a teacher allegedly flogged him and asked him to perform 162 frog jumps.

DAILY POST gathered that Ariyo, a student of Obafemi Grammar School, died on Friday.

According to a video posted online by an activist, Justadetoun, the teacher took a trash can to Ariyo’s class and told the pupils not to break it, but the deceased jokingly replied to the teacher, saying the dustbin was bought with the students’ money.

She narrated that his response had offended the teacher, who reported it to the principal and received instructions to punish the deceased.

Justadetoun stated that Ariyo was flogged with 164 strokes of the cane and, in the process, collapsed to the ground.

DAILY POST observed from the video that Ariyo, who was placed on a drip, was groaning and struggling to speak from the hospital bed.

Meanwhile, the police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, who confirmed the incident in the late hours of Friday, said contrary to the report, the deceased was beaten with 24 strokes of the cane and was made to do 162 frog jumps.

Odutola said he died at the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta.

She said, “The incident happened on October 15, 2024. The deceased was asked to do 162 frog jumps and was given 24 strokes of the cane. He was rushed to FMC Idi-Aba for medical attention, and he died today [Friday].”

The PRO noted that the corpse has been deposited at the Ayetoro mortuary for autopsy and that the investigation into the cause of death is still underway.
