Strengthen diplomatic presence to boost economy, FG urged

The Executive Assistant on External Relations to the Governor of Delta State,  Sunday Ofehe, has raised concerns over Nigeria’s limited diplomatic presence, warning that it could hinder the country’s economic growth and international influence.

Speaking at the launch of the National Business Masterclass in Lagos on Friday, Ofehe pinpointed that Nigeria’s absence in global diplomatic circles is costing the nation opportunities to strengthen its economy and advance its interests on the world stage.

The programme, convened by Top3 Solutions in partnership with the Institute of Certified Business Consultants Canada and Optiss Capital, focused on “Positioning Nigerian Business for Export and Global Competitiveness.”

Ofehe highlighted Nigeria’s diplomatic shortcomings, noting that despite the current administration being in office for over a year, nearly 110 of Nigeria’s diplomatic missions lack ambassadors.

“No country does that,” he remarked. “Even in the Netherlands, the United States has three ambassadors, recognising the significance of strong diplomatic ties. Without getting it right diplomatically, we can’t make economic strides.”

According to Ofehe, Nigeria’s underrepresentation at international organizations and in diplomatic engagements hampers its ability to negotiate effectively on trade and economic issues. “Institutions play a very critical role.

If we want to compete internationally, we must have a strong presence in international treaties and organizations, like the World Trade Organization,” he stated, adding that Africa, in general, has struggled to present a united front in such forums.

He further criticised the lack of government investment in foreign relations, pointing out that proper diplomatic representation is crucial for President Bola Tinubu’s international engagements to be effective.

“When the President travels abroad, the level of diplomatic presence determines the quality of communication with host nations. During a recent visit to the Netherlands, the absence of an ambassador limited the impact of that trip,” he explained.

In his call to action, Ofehe urged the Federal Government to prioritise foreign affairs by appointing ambassadors promptly, increasing funding for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and ensuring that diplomats are well-trained for international negotiations.

“The difference between success and failure for Nigeria is having the right people in place to leverage our potential on the global stage,” he argued.

Beyond appointing ambassadors, Ofehe suggested building a “Think Tank” of experts, including seasoned diplomats and academics, to provide guidance on Nigeria’s international strategies.

He praised the resilience and business acumen of Nigerians, drawing examples from the success stories of businesspeople in Delta State and across the country, many of whom have thrived despite economic challenges.

Ofehe concluded with a call for Nigeria to leverage its vast population and resources more effectively. “Nigeria, with its massive population and wealth of natural resources, has the potential to be a major global player.

However, until we establish a strong diplomatic foundation, we will continue to face challenges in realizing our economic potential.”
