Space Engineers to Honor Air Force Chief Aguiyi in 2025

The Nigerian Institute of Space Engineers has announced its decision to confer the institute’s fellowship award on the Chief of Defence Transformation and Innovation at the Defence Headquarters, Nkem Aguiyi, for his various achievements in his capacity.

This was made known in a statement signed by the National President of the association, Engr Babalola Sunday, and obtained by our correspondent on Monday.

The institute stated that its decision stemmed from the recognition of the air chief’s efforts, consistency, and dedication to space- and satellite-related developments.

The institute President added that Aguiyi, who is commonly referred to as the “Christopher Columbus” of the Nigerian Armed Forces and in Nigeria’s space ecosystem, was part of the pioneering members of those who made Satellite Communications Programmes workable in Nigeria.

The group said, “Often regarded as the ‘Christopher Columbus of the Nigerian Armed Forces’ in our nation’s space ecosystem, AVM Aguiyi’s pioneering work is part of the foundation for everything we celebrate today in Nigeria’s Satellite Communications Programme, which evolved to be known as NIGCOMSAT.

“His pioneering involvement in establishing the Defence Space Administration, involvement in the Know-How Technology Transfer training at the China Academy of Space Technology, and leadership of the Nigerian Air Force’s team on communications satellites helped transform Nigeria from a space spectator to an active participant.”

Speaking further, the institute announced that Aguiyi’s decoration was a decision arrived at after rigorous consideration of efforts in the space ecosystem.

The statement further read, “On behalf of the Executive Committee and Members of the Nigerian Institution of Space Engineers, I am pleased to convey to you that, deservedly, you have been found worthy to be a recipient of the ‘NISEng Fellowship Award’. This award is in recognition of your numerous contributions, consistency, and dedication to the development of the space engineering profession in Nigeria.

“The presentation of the Fellowship Award will take place during the 2025 Annual Distinguished Lecture in honour of Brig. Gen. (rtd.) M.O. Agu, FNSE, scheduled to be held on October 8, 2025, in Abuja.”

The institute in another publication announced the institute’s move to reward the military officer, adding, “As we continue to advance Nigeria’s space capabilities, drawing from the insights of those who blazed the trail becomes not only beneficial but also essential.

“The dialogue today dwelled on enriching our collective mission to strengthen Nigeria’s position in the global space community and to continue to strive for excellence for national development.”
