A stalwart of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Oyo State, Barr Niyi Aborisade, has cautioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu against actions that could stifle opposition voices and undermine press freedom, warning that such tendencies pose a serious threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
Addressing journalists in Ibadan during a World Press Conference, Aborisade expressed concern over what he described as a shrinking political space in the country, alleging that opposition parties are increasingly being targeted through subtle and systemic measures.
Arguing that democracy thrives on robust engagement among diverse political actors, he stressed that any attempt to silence dissenting voices or weaken the media would erode accountability and public trust in governance.
“Silencing opposition and the media is dangerous to the survival of democracy. It deprives citizens of alternatives, weakens transparency, and creates room for unchecked governance,” he said.
He also warned the Bola Tinubu-led government against suppressing the media, condemning a comment made by Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, against Seun Okinbaloye of Channels Television.
The governorship aspirant specifically raised alarm over recent developments within his party, particularly the delisting of some leaders by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which he suggested may have been influenced by external forces.
According to him, the trend signals a broader attempt to suppress credible opposition across the country, warning that such actions could push Nigeria towards authoritarianism if left unchecked.
Despite the challenges, Aborisade maintained that the ADC remains resolute, noting that the party would proceed with its scheduled congresses and conventions in line with constitutional provisions.
He emphasised that INEC’s role is limited to observing party activities, not interfering in their internal processes, insisting that the commission must uphold neutrality and act within the bounds of the law.
