Seplat Energy has concluded the second edition of its Lagos Media Entrepreneurship Programme, with 50 journalists participating in a two-day training designed to equip them with business and technology skills relevant to the evolving media industry.
The just-concluded programme, which followed last year’s inaugural session, focused on correspondents covering the energy, judiciary and business sectors.
It featured workshops, interactive sessions and lectures on entrepreneurship, financial intelligence and digital media trends.
Speaking at the opening, Seplat Energy’s Director of External Affairs and Social Performance, Chioma Afe, said the initiative was aimed at supporting the professional and entrepreneurial development of journalists.
“The importance of this training cannot be overstated. It allows you to deepen your understanding of business principles, explore new revenue models, and leverage digital technologies to expand your reach and impact,” she said.
Sessions were led by academics, practitioners and public officials, including Professor Pat Utomi, who outlined the problem-solving role of entrepreneurs in society, while the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotosho, addressed the decline in readership and encouraged journalists to uphold neutrality and fact-checking.
Speaking in a session on self-awareness and networking, Dr Solomon Avbioroko stressed the value of continuous learning for entrepreneurial success.
The Lagos State Director of the DSS, Babajide Adisa, spoke on national security, the importance of intelligence gathering, and its legal frameworks. He stressed collaboration among government agencies, media, and the public in the fight against insecurity and terrorism.
Also, Mrs Uloma Okoro advised participants to build businesses around personal skills and resources, while highlighting the inevitability of mistakes in entrepreneurship.
On financial management, Mr Olu Onakoya urged discipline in spending and investment decisions, while a multimedia producer, Nnamdi Uwaemelulam, spoke on digital media tools and audience habits.
The programme combined lectures with practical exercises, providing journalists with tools to explore entrepreneurship while maintaining their professional roles in the media.
