Segilola Aligns Mining Growth with Social Impact

Segilola Resources Operating Limited, a subsidiary of Thor Explorations Ltd. and operator of Nigeria’s first commercial gold mine, has capped a landmark year with a large-scale Christmas celebration that brought festive cheer to more than 2,000 children and their families across its host communities in Osun State.

The end-of-year event, held at the Iperindo town hall on December 20, highlighted SROL’s sustained commitment to its host communities and underscored the importance of partnership, unity and shared value, according to a statement from the firm on Wednesday.

Organised in collaboration with SINIC Engineering and GBfoods, the celebration featured music, games, performances and gift distribution, creating a family-focused gathering that brought together children, parents and community members.

The company said the event reinforced long-standing relationships with its host communities and demonstrated its approach to responsible community development and social wellbeing.

Speaking on the significance of the celebration, the Community Development and Stakeholder Manager at Segilola Resources Operating Limited, Madhurii Sarkar-Amoda, described the gathering as part of an ongoing commitment to inclusive engagement.

“This is the fifth edition of the Segilola host communities Christmas party and family fun day. We value our host communities and our aim is to continue to impact these communities positively,” she said.

“This celebration was our way of sharing joy with families and reminding them that Segilola Resources remains committed to building relationships rooted in trust, inclusion, and shared value. Moments like this strengthen the bonds that make continued long-term impact possible.”

Beyond the Christmas party, SROL also extended its end-of-year activities by sponsoring the decoration and beautification of a roundabout and a flyover in Oshogbo, Osun State, and distributing seasonal gifts within its host communities. The company further demonstrated its support for local culture as a corporate sponsor of the Iwude Festival, a major annual cultural event for the Ijesha people.

According to the company, the festive activities crowned a year of wide-ranging community engagement across Osun State, spanning economic empowerment, health, youth development and community infrastructure.

In 2025, SROL provided business and digital skills training for more than 200 women, while its Livelihood Restoration Programme supported farmers in host communities with high-yield cocoa and oil palm seedlings. The company also delivered medical resources to over 3,000 people and launched SegunCare, a programme designed to support residents living with chronic health conditions.

SROL’s community-focused approach gained national recognition during the year. In November, the company received multiple awards, including the Community Development Champion of the Year at the CSR Reporters’ Social Impact and Sustainability Awards.

It was also honoured by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment with the “Award of Excellence: Upholding the Principle of Decent Work” and received the “Distinguished Corporate Award” from the Nigerian Society of Engineers.

The recognitions, SROL said, reflect its leadership position within Nigeria’s expanding mining industry and its emphasis on creating sustainable value beyond mineral extraction.

With its Christmas party and family fun day marking the close of an award-winning year, Segilola Resources Operating Limited reaffirmed its commitment to placing host communities at the centre of its operations and to building a future anchored on trust, partnership and lasting social impact.
