Sahara Group Boosts Africa’s Sustainability With Gas & Solar

Sahara Group has reaffirmed its commitment to Africa’s energy transition, citing gas and renewable energy as central to its 2024 sustainability report.

According to a statement, Sahara Group said the report, themed ‘Beyond Energy: Fostering Africa’s Sustainable Future’, was prepared in alignment with the Global Reporting Initiative Standards and maps the Group’s initiatives to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The Director of Governance & Sustainability, Ejiro Gray, said the company sees sustainability as the engine of transformation for its business, communities and Africa’s future.

“We are scaling up investments in gas infrastructure and renewable energy, implementing nature-based carbon mitigation solutions, and innovating for greater operational efficiency,” Gray said.

She said environmental, social, and governance risk management was institutionalised across the group in 2024, embedding sustainability more deeply into strategic decision-making.

“We are proud of the strides we’ve made. Sustainability is a journey, and we remain unwavering in our drive to go beyond energy, for Africa and the world,” Gray stated.

The Head of Corporate Communications at Sahara, Bethel Obioma, stated, “Through innovation and collaboration, we’re helping to shape a future where Africa is not just energy-secure but sustainability-led. We see every milestone as a brick in the foundation of long-term value for the planet and its people.”

Key figures in the report include over fouthree million man-hours with zero lost-time injuries; 612,498 kg of CO₂ emissions avoided through recycling initiatives; more than 210,000 kg of recyclables recovered; and N43.5m paid to over 1,000 waste collectors under the ‘Go Recycling’ initiative.

The Group reported over 75,000 lives impacted directly and indirectly through 13 PCSR projects across 11 countries; biodiversity and reforestation projects in Ghana, Tanzania, Nigeria and Dubai; training of 11,000+ students in green entrepreneurship at the University of Lagos; and deployment of three per cent of operational expenditure to sustainable host community development via the Host Community Development Trust.

“At Sahara, sustainability is human. It means empowering our workforce, building community resilience, and ensuring that growth lifts everyone, especially the underserved,” said Emilomo Arorote, Group Head, Human Resources.

Sahara said its sustainability strategy spans its upstream, midstream, downstream and power operations, prioritising emissions reduction and technology-driven innovation, with gas as a transition fuel alongside pilot solar projects and energy efficiency.

“Sahara Group’s sustainability strategy continues to cut across upstream, midstream, downstream, and power business lines, prioritising emissions reduction and technology-driven innovation. Sahara Group has maintained its focus on gas as a transition fuel, while expanding pilot solar projects and advancing energy efficiency,” the statement added.
