Police kill armed rubber, recover AK-47, 15 rounds live ammunition

The Imo State Police Command reported that its officers killed a suspected armed robber and recovered an AK-47 rifle with 15 rounds of ammunition after foiling an attack during a routine patrol along Owerri-Aba Road near Imo Airport.

In a release from the office of the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Henry Okoye, it was disclosed that on October 29, 2024, at approximately 6:30 PM, operatives from the Command’s Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) successfully repelled an attack by suspected hoodlums.

The PPRO stated that about ten attackers in two vehicles launched a violent assault but were effectively countered by the unit, demonstrating remarkable valor.

“In the ensuing gun battle, one suspect was neutralized, while the others fled with gunshot injuries, abandoning their operational vehicle, a Mercedes Jeep, ash in color, with Lagos State registration number AAA 101 GR,” he said.

ASP Okoye further reported that no casualties were recorded among the operatives. He confirmed that during the operation, an AK-47 rifle, fifteen rounds of 9.62mm live ammunition, and the abandoned vehicle were recovered.

He added that officers are conducting an intense search of nearby bushes for the fleeing suspects.

Following this development, the Commissioner of Police urged the public, especially medical practitioners, to report anyone seen with or treating gunshot wounds to the nearest police station or via 0803 477 3600. He reiterated the Command’s commitment to ensuring the safety of all citizens and its readiness to address any threats to public peace in the state.
