Oyo Windstorm: 20 Communities in Darkness

No fewer than 20 communities in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital have been plunged into darkness following a windstorm that damaged electricity infrastructure along the Gbagi-Olubadan Estate axis on New Ife Express Road.

The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, in a statement on Wednesday, said the incident affected several critical feeders, including the Alakia 33 kV, Adogba 33 kV, and New Ife Road 11 kV, resulting in widespread power outages.

IBEDC noted that several high-tension poles were brought down, while distribution transformers and the Alakia 7.5 MVA Injection Substation were also impacted, disrupting power supply to numerous residential, commercial and industrial areas.

Affected communities include Olubadan Industrial Estate, Biosis, Westlink, Nigerian Brewery Area, Sword Sweet, Dana Pharmacy, Opeyemi, Alalubosa, Majawe, Airport, Idi Obi, and others.

While apologising to its customers for the inconvenience caused by the storm, the DisCo said its technical team was working urgently to restore power supply to the affected areas.

The statement read, “The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company regrets to inform the public of a power outage caused by a windstorm that damaged several high-tension poles along the Gbagi-Olubadan Estate axis on New Ife Express Road, Ibadan. This has affected the Alakia 33 kV, Adogba 33 kV, and New Ife Road 11 kV feeders.

“Several distribution transformers and the Alakia 7.5MVA Injection Substation were impacted, disrupting supply to areas including Olubadan Industrial Estate, Biosis, Westlink, Nigerian Brewery Area, Sword Sweet, Dana Pharmacy, and several residential and commercial zones such as Opeyemi, Alalubosa, Majawe, Airport, Idi Obi, Ogo Oluwa, IGEM, Gbaremu, Isebo Olosan, Ogungbade, Oluwo, Egbeda, Akiti Awaye, Badeku, Jago, Bethel Phase 2, National Kulodi, and Alakia New Ife Road.

“Our technical team is working urgently to restore supply. We apologise for the inconvenience.”

The PUNCH recalls that a raging rainstorm wreaked havoc at Sango-Ota, in the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State last year, plunging over 40 communities into darkness.

The storm pulled down electric poles and cables, disrupting traffic on the Sango-Ota highway on April 21.

Then, the IBEDC appealed to residents to avoid contact with the broken poles and cables.
