Super Eagles left-back Bruno Onyemaechi will miss Nigeria’s friendly against Jordan after leaving the team camp in Turkey to meet his Portuguese partner, Ines Fontes, who just gave birth to their first child.
The 26-year-old player, who had been absent from Nigeria’s first training session after the 2-1 win over Iran, confirmed the arrival of the baby on social media.
Onyemaechi posted a photo of himself holding his newborn with the caption, “Best gift ever,” hours after Fontes shared photos from the hospital on Saturday to confirm the baby’s arrival.

As of the time of filing this report, the gender has not been publicly revealed.
Fontes is a Portuguese content creator who has been with Onyemaechi since his days in Portugal with Boavista. She shared photos of her baby bump on social media at the start of March to announce the pregnancy.
The couples were congratulated by the official Super Eagles X account, “Congratulations to Bruno Onyemaechi and his partner on the birth of their first child.”
Players are typically granted a few days away from camp following the birth of a child, making Onyemaechi’s involvement against Jordan uncertain.
However, coach Eric Chelle has adequate cover at left-back, with Zaidu Sanusi fit and available to fill in should the Olympiacos man not return in time.
