The Nigeria Union of Journalists has frowned over a statement made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, directed at Channels Television journalist, Seun Okinbaloye.
In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by its National President, Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, the union described the minister’s comment as reckless and dangerous.
It will be recalled that Wike had reportedly said, “If there’s any way to break the screen, I would have shot him,” in one of his recent media parley in Abuja.

The NUJ however said such remark amounts to an attempt to intimidate and silence the press.
The union noted that it initially withheld its response, expecting the minister to show remorse and retract the statement.
However, it said the lack of an apology or clarification suggests the comment was deliberate.
According to the NUJ, the remark undermines press freedom and democratic principles, while also creating a climate of fear for journalists carrying out their duties.
The union warned that such statements from a senior government official send a troubling signal that critical reporting could attract hostility or even threats of violence.
It therefore demanded an immediate and unreserved apology from Wike, describing his comment as reprehensible.
The NUJ also called on the Federal Government to publicly condemn the statement and take concrete steps to protect journalists and safeguard media independence.
In addition, it urged media organisations, civil society groups, and democracy advocates to stand in solidarity against what it described as an attack on press freedom.
