The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has congratulated Maryamu Idris on her appointment as Nigeria’s National Representative to the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.
Announcing the development in an official statement on its X handle on Wednesday, NNPC said Idris’s new role marks a pivotal step in representing Nigeria’s interests within the influential cartel of oil-producing nations.
“We congratulate Maryamu Idris, Managing Director of NNPC Trading Limited, on her appointment as the National Representative for Nigeria at the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC),” the statement read.
The corporation hailed her achievements in many capacities in the oil sector.
“Maryamu Idris serves as the Managing Director of NNPC Trading Limited and also holds the distinguished position of Nigeria’s National Representative to the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.
“Maryamu’s extensive experience in the energy sector includes leading Pricing and Valuation efforts within NNPC’s Crude Oil Marketing Division and serving as a Technical Advisor to Nigeria’s OPEC Delegation. She also played a foundational role in Nigeria’s engagement with the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) and contributed to oil sector reforms through her work with the Bureau of Public Enterprises and the Oil and Gas Implementation Committee (OGIC).
“She holds a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) degree in Economics from the University of Abuja, Nigeria, and a Master of Science (M.Sc) in Energy Economics from the University of Dundee in Scotland, United Kingdom.”
NNPC said her appointment is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s voice on production quotas, pricing stability, and sustainable energy policies amid volatile global oil dynamics.
It said, “In her dual roles, she will play a pivotal part in shaping both national and international energy strategies.
“In her capacity as Nigeria’s OPEC National Representative, Maryamu will act as the country’s principal technical liaison within the Organisation.
“Now a member of OPEC’s Economic Commission Board (ECB), where she will contribute to key technical deliberations and policy recommendations, her new role will involve close collaboration with the OPEC Governor and national stakeholders such as NNPC Limited, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, ensuring that Nigeria’s energy interests are effectively represented and aligned with broader OPEC objectives.”
PUNCH Online reports that in Idris’ capacity, she can play a crucial role in reinforcing the country’s commitment to OPEC rules, especially in light of recent assurances by Minister Lokpobiri that Nigeria will not exceed its production quota, even as it seeks adjustments to reflect its capacity.
