The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and First Exploration & Petroleum Development Company Limited have successfully cut routine gas flaring by 96 per cent at the Anyala (OML 83) and Madu (OML 85) fields, marking a major step towards environmental sustainability.

In a statement on Thursday, NNPCL hailed the achievement as a major stride in cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

The Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd., Olufemi Soneye, stated in the statement that the milestone aligned with Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement and was achieved through an associated gas reinjection strategy at the Madu field, located offshore Bayelsa State.

The initiative ensures that gas, which would otherwise have been flared, is now safely stored in a designated underground reservoir, significantly reducing environmental impact.

The Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., Mele Kyari, also hailed the achievement as a testament to the company’s dedication to responsible resource management and sustainability.

“This achievement underscores our commitment to leveraging resources responsibly and optimising production to meet energy needs and sustainability goals. It reflects our commitment to aligning our operations with global standards and environmental best practices,” Kyari said.

Similarly, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of First E&P, Ademola Adeyemi-Bero, emphasised the company’s dedication to environmental sustainability.

“This milestone reflects our unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible energy production. By substantially reducing our carbon footprint, we are contributing to a sustainable energy future that benefits both the environment and the communities we serve,” Adeyemi-Bero stated.

The initiative complies with regulatory frameworks set by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, reinforcing the JV’s adherence to national environmental standards and global best practices.
