The Director of Expenditure (Social) at the Budget Office of the Federation, Yusuf Kurawa, has said Nigeria is currently grappling with fiscal challenges but assured that ongoing economic reforms by the Federal Government are beginning to yield positive results.
Kurawa stated this while speaking with journalists on Friday in Kano, noting that the country’s economic situation reflects a broader global trend where many nations are facing similar financial constraints.
He, however, appealed to Nigerians to remain patient, expressing confidence that the reforms initiated by President Bola Tinubu would gradually stabilize the economy.
“Nigeria, like many countries around the world, is facing fiscal challenges. However, with the current leadership, reforms are ongoing and we are already seeing signs of improvement. We urge Nigerians to be patient; things will take shape,” he said.
Addressing concerns over continued government borrowing despite the removal of the fuel subsidy, Kurawa explained that borrowing is a common global economic practice and should not necessarily be viewed negatively.
“There is nothing inherently wrong with borrowing. It is a global practice. What is important is how it is managed, and I can assure you that the government is on top of the situation,” he said.
He reiterated that the Federal Government remains committed to prudent financial management, adding that measures are being implemented to ensure economic stability and sustainable growth.
Speaking on the role of the Budget Office, Kurawa described the national budget as one of the most critical policy documents in any country, second only to the constitution. According to him, the office plays a central role in conceptualizing, coordinating, and organizing the budget process to ensure efficiency and accountability.
“The budget is a very important document. It guides government spending and development priorities. At the Budget Office, we handle it with utmost care and professionalism,” he said.
He further noted that the office operates under the leadership of the Director-General, Tanimu Yakubu, whom he described as a seasoned technocrat with deep expertise in fiscal management. Kurawa urged Nigerians not to misunderstand the budgetary process, assuring that due diligence is always followed in preparing and implementing the nation’s financial plans.
“Everything is on course. The Budget Office is on top of the situation, and Nigerians should have confidence in the system,” he added.
The Budget Office director spoke on the sidelines of the wedding ceremony of his daughters, Hassana Salihi Yusuf Muhammad and Fatima Yusuf Muhammad, held at the Bayero University (Old Site) Mosque. He expressed joy and gratitude at witnessing the marriage of his daughters, describing it as a rare privilege and a blessing.
“As a parent, it is a moment of great joy to see your children grow, be trained, and eventually get married. It is something every parent looks forward to,” he said.
He admitted that while the occasion brought happiness, it was also accompanied by a sense of emotional transition as parents adjust to their children starting new lives.
“There is always that feeling—joy for their new beginning and a bit of sadness because they are leaving home. But overall, it is a fulfilling moment,” he added.
Offering advice to the newlyweds, Kurawa emphasized the importance of faith, mutual understanding, and openness in marriage. He urged them to remain committed to their religious values and maintain transparency in their relationship.
“Marriage requires faithfulness, patience, and openness. Couples must be honest with each other and build their home on strong moral and religious foundations,” he said.
The wedding ceremony, which attracted family members, friends, and well-wishers, provided a moment of personal celebration for the Budget Office director, even as he reflected on national economic issues and the responsibilities of his office.
