Nigerians Missing From Best Candidates’ List As 3 Ghanaians Outperform Other Nations


Ghanaian students dominated the 2025 WASSCE In ernational Excellence Awards, sweeping the three top positions and maintaining a five-year trend of excellence.

Nigeria, despite presenting the highest number of candidates in the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) yearly, underperformed in the exam conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

The exam is conducted yearly for students in The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone. Miss Huda Suleman won the top prize, with Paula Suwo winning the second place and Matthea Andoh the third prize. The three candidates were selected from 2,612,830 who sat for the examination in the five countries.

The awards were presented to the winners at the 74th Annual Council Meeting of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in Accra, Ghana. The meeting was declared open by the President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, represented by Vice President, Jane Naana OpokuAgyemang.

According to WAEC Headquarters, Accra, the meeting also witnessed the 31st in the series of the Council’s Annual Endowment Fund Lectures, titled: ‘Fostering Assessment Integrity within the Context of Credentialism’, delivered by the Technical Advisor to Minister of Education, Ghana, Prof George K. T. Oduro.
