The president of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, Professor Sadiq Abubakar, has urged engineers to embrace data and digital transformation to remain relevant.
Abubakar made this remark at the completion ceremony of the Specialised Professional Development Training for Young Engineers (Cohort 2) and Senior Engineers (Cohort 1), organised by the Department of Professional Development in collaboration with Techlytics and Citadel for Technological and Engineering Limited.
Abubakar, ably represented by the Registrar, Prof. Okorie Uche, said continuing professional development practice in engineering was a lifelong process that maintains and enhances skills, knowledge, and experience to stay current with industry trends and best practices.
He said, “Continuing professional development practice in engineering practice is crucial for engineering practitioners to remain competent, relevant, and employable in a rapidly evolving profession.
“Hence, data and digital transformation must be embraced as the future of engineering in Nigeria to ensure engineers remain relevant in today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape.”
Meanwhile, the President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Margaret Oguntala, said in recognising the ever-evolving demands of the engineering profession, the training was thoughtfully designed in two categories to address the needs of different age groups and experience levels.
She said, “The first category, tailored for engineers above the age of 35, focused on cutting-edge topics such as building information modelling, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things.
“The second category, designed for our younger engineers under 35, offered vital training in data analytics and cybersecurity, equipping them with the tools required to thrive in today’s data-driven world. For the senior engineers training, 252 successfully registered, and only 119 candidates were selected on a first-come basis to participate in the training. However, 64 candidates, or 53 per cent of registered participants, successfully completed the training and passed. On the other hand, for the Young Engineers training, 211 candidates successfully registered and were selected to participate in the training. Also, 53 candidates, or 26 per cent of registered candidates, successfully completed and passed the training.
“Today’s ceremony has officially marked the end of the course and the beginning of a new phase in your professional lives. I urge you to make full use of the skills and insights you have acquired. Be bold in tackling challenges and stay curious and adaptive in the face of rapid technological advancements. Let this be a stepping stone to greater innovation, deeper problem-solving and continued excellence. Remember, continuous learning is not a choice; it is a necessity in today’s dynamic world.”
