Nigerian Elected VP of African Petroleum Geologists


A Nigerian, Mr Seye Ekun, has been elected Vice President of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Africa Region for the term July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026.

According to a statement by AAPG Africa Region on Wednesday, Ekun joined the association in 2000 as a full voting member and had held several leadership positions, including Treasurer of the Africa Region between 2020 and 2022.

He had coordinated the AAPG/Imperial Barrel Award programmes, organised the first AAPG Geosciences Technology Workshop in Africa, and had been a member of the Enhancing Mature Fields’ Life Cycles Committee since 2017.

The statement added that Ekun was recognised this year for 25 years of membership and received the AAPG Distinguished Service Award in 2023.

He also served as a Certified Petroleum Geologist with the Division of Professional Affairs between 2020 and 2023.

“Now, stepping into the role of Vice President, Seye is poised to lead a community that spans more than 18,000 members in ninety-four countries,” the association read.

It described his appointment as “a celebration of a career built on passion, volunteerism, and the pursuit of excellence in geoscience” and expressed optimism that his leadership would energise the Africa Region, inspire innovative projects, and support AAPG’s mission to foster scientific inquiry and promote sustainable practices across the continent.

“Mr Ekun’s journey of dedication and impact is an inspiration to the entire membership of the Africa Region, and the region anticipates the groundbreaking initiatives and positive changes that his leadership will bring in the coming term.

“The region celebrates this milestone and looks forward to a future where his vision continues to shape and uplift the geoscience community across Africa and beyond,” the statement added.
