Nigerian conservator elected IRF Africa representative

Assistant Conservator of Parks with the National Park Service, Mohammed Bala, has emerged as the Africa Regional Representative of the International Ranger Federation.

Bala’s election took place during the 10th World Ranger Congress held in Hyeres, France, recently according to a statement.

The NPS stated Bala, upon his election, vowed to advance the interests of African rangers, forest guards, and other conservation workers.

“I am committed to providing African rangers with renewed hope and robust representation at the IRF while working towards achieving the 30×30 target,” he said, referring to the Global Biodiversity Framework goal of conserving at least 30 per cent of the planet’s land and sea by 2030.

Bala credited his success to the support of the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas, and the Conservator-General of the National Park Service, Dr Ibrahim Musa Goni, adding”Their unwavering support made this possible.”

He expressed gratitude for their role in facilitating his participation in the global elections.

The President of the International Ranger Federation, Chris Galliers, highlighted the vital role of rangers in combating climate change and biodiversity loss, querying “Ask yourself this: how much wildlife would exist without rangers? Their importance cannot be overstated.”

Galliers described rangers as “essential planetary health workers” crucial to achieving global biodiversity goals.

The 10th IRF World Ranger Congress, organised in partnership with Gardes Natures de France, brought together over 400 ranger professionals and conservationists from around the world.

The event served as a platform for knowledge exchange, skill development, and forging international collaborations to advance the ranger profession.

Beyond the discussions on wildlife protection and sustainable practices, the Congress celebrated the bravery and commitment of rangers, particularly those from indigenous and underrepresented communities.

It also emphasised the need for continued global support to empower rangers in their frontline battle against environmental challenges.
