Nigeria Boosts Flight Safety with N7.46bn Aviation Budget

The Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development has allocated N7.46bn for technology upgrades, staff training, safety initiatives, and operational reforms in 2026.

According to the 2026 Appropriation Bill, the funding will drive automation of ministry operations, library services, registry systems, and performance management. Projects include a hybrid professional audio-visual conference system, e-library digitisation, enterprise content management, and a statistical database to support data analysis and sustainable development goals.

Staff welfare, capacity building and innovation also feature prominently. The budget includes N50m for legal resources and arbitration tools, N100m for aviation operations training, and another N50m for Fargo ID card printers and partnership-based initiatives.

The construction of a corporate headquarters and staff accommodation totals over N5bn, signalling a drive to strengthen institutional capacity.

Safety and international cooperation remain priorities, with N3bn for aerospace university development, N250m for BASA/MASA bilateral agreements, and N100m for training for air traffic controllers, meteorologists, and aviation personnel.

ICT upgrades, AI applications, and Wi-Fi improvements across airports carry an N800m allocation.

Other allocations, not directly related to core operations, include consultancy fees for PPP projects and airport concessions of N300m, the procurement of additional office equipment and general service items of N200m, support for annual aviation trade union forums of N150m, and minor studies such as master plans for five international airports of N500m.

There is also funding for forensic audits, IPSAS compliance, and aviation media initiatives of N235 million.
