NGO spotlights women’s safety in Nigeria via social media

A Nigerian gender-safety advocacy group is shifting its campaign strategy to social media, betting on digital storytelling to draw attention to the everyday safety concerns faced by women and girls across the country.

Safety For Every Girl said it has launched the 2026 “Her Safety, Her Power” National Social Media Competition, moving away from its earlier essay-based format to short-form video content designed for platforms such as Instagram. The initiative invites Nigerian females aged 13 and above to share brief video reflections on personal safety experiences while also proposing practical, community-level solutions.

SFEG said the move reflects changing media habits among young Nigerians and the growing influence of social platforms in shaping public conversation. Participants are required to submit original 60–90 second videos using a dedicated campaign hashtag, with entries closing on 12 February 2026.

Winners will receive cash prizes, with the top award set at N750,000.

“The safety of women remains a daily concern for many Nigerians,” Founder of Safety for Every Girl, Chioma Nwigwe, said in a statement.

She said the campaign aims to elevate voices that are often excluded from policy discussions and to turn lived experiences into ideas that can inform action.

The competition will culminate in March at SFEG’s bi-annual Period Summit in Lagos, where shortlisted entries will be showcased before an audience that includes policymakers, private-sector leaders and civil society groups. The summit will also feature the launch of the Power Awards, recognising contributions to safety advocacy, as well as panel discussions focused on practical responses to gender-based safety challenges.

The 2026 campaign is backed by MTN Nigeria, highlighting growing private-sector involvement in social advocacy initiatives. SFEG said the partnership underscores the link between women’s safety, social wellbeing and broader economic development.

By shifting its focus to digital platforms, the organisation said it hopes to expand participation, particularly among younger women, and sustain national attention on safety issues beyond traditional advocacy channels.
