NFF Targets Kayode To Bolster Super Eagles 2027 AFCON Squad

In an effort to bolster Nigeria’s team ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is focusing on Michael Kayode and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) as he looks into the prospect of winning his loyalty to the country.

Given that he was born in Italy to Nigerian parents, Kayode, who presently plays for Brentford, is qualified to represent both Italy and Nigeria.

New Telegraph recalls that the 21-year-old defender has represented Italy at the U-18, U-19, and U-21 levels in the past.

Nigeria’s football officials have rekindled interest in the versatile full-back, especially since he hasn’t yet made a senior competitive appearance for Italy, which might allow him to switch allegiance in accordance with FIFA criteria.

“The Nigeria Football Federation is exploring the possibility of adding Michael Kayode to the Super Eagles squad,” SportsBoom reported.

Chelle is understood to be a strong admirer of the defender and is keen to meet with his representatives as he looks to bolster his options ahead of the next continental tournament.

“Eric Chelle is keen on the player and is working to arrange a meeting with his representatives.”

“Chelle is said to value Kayode’s physical presence, energy and long throw-in ability, viewing him as a strong addition ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.”

Prior to this, Kayode’s international career seemed certain, since the defender had stated that he wanted to play for Italy. However, Nigeria’s hopes of obtaining his services have been rekindled by his persistent absence from senior call-ups under recently departed Italy head coach Gennaro Gattuso.

The right-back’s ascent has been influenced by his consistent advancement in Italian football. He transferred to AC Gozzano, a lower-tier team, to get regular playing time after seven years in Juventus’ youth. He made 34 appearances and scored twice as the team won promotion.

After joining Brentford on loan in January 2025, Kayode signed a permanent contract in May that would keep him with the Premier League team until June 2030.
