The Niger Delta Power Holding Company says it has developed strategies to commercialise stranded power and end years of unutilised electricity.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of NDPHC, Engr Jennifer Adighije, stated this recently after being honoured as the Young Achiever of the Year at the 2025 Energy Times Awards for her contributions to the power sector.
According to her, the government and the NDPHC have worked hard to ramp up power generation, saying the next step is to ensure stranded power is dedicated to the right off-takers or bilateral customers.
Adighije disclosed that this will allow the company to boost its revenue-generating capacity.
She said, “We have been able to ramp up our generation capacity, and we’ve also come up with strategies that would ensure that we dedicate our stranded electricity to the right off-takers, the right bilateral customers, and the right traders.
“That would ensure that we commercialise our stranded capacity and enhance the revenue-generating capacity of the company.”
The managing director said Nigerians should expect an improved power supply due to enhanced operational efficiency.
“Nigerians should expect improved operational efficiency across the gas-to-electricity value chain because we’re hoping that by the time we ramp up our generation and dedicate it to the right industrial and commercial clusters, we will also be able to enhance our operational efficiency,” Adighije explained.
Stranded power refers to electricity generated by a power plant or facility that cannot be delivered to consumers or utilised effectively due to limitations in transmission infrastructure, market demand, or operational constraints.
Despite its low power generation capacity, the country has been unable to transmit and distribute generated power to consumers.
Distribution companies have been accused of refusing to take powers allocated to them to reduce debt.
Speaking further, Adighije noted that the new management under her leadership has a clear mandate to scale power generation.
According to her, the NDPHC is the only agency with the express mandate to carry out interventions across the value chain, stressing that her team is not losing focus on the mandate.
“The mandate is obvious to us, which is to scale generation, transmission, and distribution capacity across the power sector. We are the only agency, institution, or entity in the power sector with the express mandate to carry out interventions across the entire gas-to-electricity ecosystem. And we’re not losing sight of this,” she stated.
Adighije’s Achiever of the Year award was presented to her at a dinner held in Lagos.
The organisers said the MD was selected for having shown an “unwavering commitment to the sector-wide goal of 6,000 megawatts power generation to ensure widespread access to quality electricity”.
It was stated that briefly after her appointment in August 2024, Adighije ensured the restoration of two turbine units that had been offline due to bearing defects, adding 230 230MW to the national power generation output.
