NAMA in Germany to procure air-to-ground communications gadgets

As part of efforts to modernise the Nigerian airspace infrastructure, the Nigeria Air Management Authority said its delegation is currently at the Rhode and Schwarz factory in Germany to assess the factory with the intention of procuring some critical air-ground communication equipment.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Dr. Abdullahi Musa, and made available to The PUNCH on Tuesday.

The statement noted that the visit was to ensure high power and standards are delivered to Nigeria through the on-the-spot assessment of the factory.

The Managing Director of NAMA, Engr Farouk Ahmed Umar, led the team to hold high-level talks with officials of Rhode and Schwarz as well as Deo Makro Ltd, an indigenous contractor who facilitated the visit.

The statement read, “as part of the project, NAMA will be deploying the Rohde & Schwarz High-Frequency (HF) transceiver, equipped with advanced signal processing algorithms that significantly reduce the noise levels typically associated with traditional HF systems.

“This technology leap is expected to boost the long-range air-to-ground communications capabilities across the Nigerian airspace. It is specifically designed to address the range limitations of the current Very High Frequency systems.

The new HF solution would ensure robust and reliable communication coverage over the Gulf of Guinea, extending far into the Atlantic Ocean, across the northern desert regions beyond the Kano Flight Information Region.”

Speaking during the visit, Engr Farouk expressed optimism that the deployment of the communication equipment would further boost upper airspace communication in the country, stressing that “this move aligns with the President’s commitment towards enhancing the safety of the sector through upgrading and modernising airspace infrastructure.”
