The Nigeria-Britain Association has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
This pledge was made during the Association’s 56th Annual General Meeting, held recently in Lagos, where members from both countries gathered to assess achievements and outline plans for the year ahead.
Delivering his address at the AGM, the President of the N-BA, Sola Oyetayo, highlighted key milestones achieved in the past year. These included the successful hosting of the Independence Day celebration in London, the Presidential Cocktail, the Akintola Williams Youth Debate Competition, and the Annual Lecture Series.
Oyetayo paid tribute to the late patron of the association, Akintola Williams, describing him as a pillar whose legacy had shaped the growth and credibility of the Association. He also announced the appointment of former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, GCON, GCVO, as Patron, and the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr Richard Montgomery CMG, as Vice Patron.
He further acknowledged the contributions of other Vice Patrons, including Chief Olabintan Famutimi and Philip Hall OBE, stating that their roles symbolise renewed dedication to Nigeria-UK friendship.
A major highlight of the meeting was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the British Council. The agreement is aimed at facilitating mutual access to programmes and events, including internship opportunities for winners of the Akintola Williams Youth Debate Competition.
A similar partnership was also sealed with ORÍKÌ, a beauty and wellness brand, which now offers exclusive discounts to fully subscribed N-BA members.
In his remarks, the Honorary Secretary, Tobi Asehinde, gave an overview of the Association’s operations, noting a significant rise in membership and stronger participation, particularly from young professionals. He pointed out major activities such as youth mentorship initiatives, sustainability-focused forums, and new collaborations with UK-based organisations.
The AGM also featured the election of officers for the 2025/2026 tenure. Oyetayo was re-elected as President, alongside Tobi Asehinde as Honorary Secretary, Gboyega Olanbiwoninu as Assistant Honorary Secretary, and Gafar Odubote as the new Honorary Treasurer.
In his acceptance speech, Oyetayo expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue leading the Association and pledged to build on the legacy of “The Big I.D.E.A.” – Inclusivity, Diversity, Empowerment, and Agility.
Oyetayo reaffirmed his dedication to strengthening the ties between Nigeria, the UK, and the wider Commonwealth through friendship, cultural exchange, and mutual development.
