Luckin & METS Partner to Bring Electric Vehicles to Nigeria

Luckin Innovation Technology Co. Limited, led by CEO Wang Licai, has appointed Amb. (Dr) Olakunle Johnson as its official Nigeria Representative in a move to drive innovation and sustainable mobility in the country.

The appointment comes as part of a strategic partnership with Matan e-Transportation System, a flagship project under the MFBF Group Projects, aimed at transforming Nigeria’s transportation landscape through electric mobility.

The announcement, supervised by Luckin’s Overseas Sales Director, Angela Xie, marks a significant leap in the company’s expansion into the African market.

Ambassador Johnson, an accomplished entrepreneur and President of several strategic initiatives, including MATAN Food Bank Foundation, Automated MATAN Food Security Initiative, and MATAN Group Investments, will oversee Luckin’s sales operations in Nigeria, coordinate the setup of a local assembly plant, and establish a dedicated showroom for the company’s electric vehicle products.

METS and Luckin aim to power Nigeria’s clean mobility future through this partnership.

METS will act as a vehicle for delivering cutting-edge electric vehicles into the Nigerian market, supported by Luckin Innovation’s advanced EV technology and infrastructure expertise.

The initiative will include the rollout of electric cars, tuk-tuks, and two-wheelers powered by solar energy and high-performance battery systems.

To enable this, both entities will collaborate to develop a nationwide network of solar-powered charging stations, promoting clean energy usage and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

This infrastructure is expected to ease the adoption of electric vehicles while offering a sustainable alternative to conventional transportation.

Ambassador Johnson’s appointment also includes a mandate to establish an assembly plant in Nigeria, enabling local production of electric vehicles. This move is expected to drastically reduce import costs, increase local job creation, and contribute to Nigeria’s industrial growth.

In a bold step towards inclusive economic development, MFBF announced it is acquiring 10,000 electric vehicles for use in community farming and food distribution logistics.

These vehicles will be instrumental in transporting agricultural produce from farms to food banks and will support ongoing free food distribution programmes targeted at vulnerable populations across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas.

Digital training programmes for “feeding marshals” will also be implemented to ensure efficiency in distribution, aligning with the initiative’s broader goals of combating food insecurity and promoting rural development.

Beyond reducing carbon emissions and promoting energy efficiency, the METS project is expected to create jobs across the EV value chain, including manufacturing, maintenance, charging infrastructure, and training.

This aligns with Nigeria’s vision for a greener economy and supports global climate action goals.

Speaking on the development, Amb. Johnson reaffirmed his commitment to championing innovative solutions that not only empower communities but also position Nigeria as a leader in clean and smart mobility.

“Our goal is to make sustainable transportation accessible, affordable, and impactful. With the support of Luckin Innovation, we are laying the foundation for a cleaner, more resilient future,” he said.
