LG Electronics Nigeria has inaugurated a solar-powered borehole in the Illah community, Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State, hailing it as a solution to years of water scarcity and health challenges among residents.
According to a statement, LG carried out the project under its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative to deliver clean, safe water using solar energy, marking a step in improving the quality of life in the community.
“This is a historic day for our community,” said Illah Palace representative, Paul Udu. “For decades, we’ve prayed for help. Today, LG answered. Our children can now drink clean water, our women can rest, and our people can live healthier lives.”
According to the company, the solar-powered facility features high-efficiency photovoltaic panels, stainless steel submersible pumps, and purification filters, ensuring that the water meets World Health Organisation standards.
LG stated that the system is designed to be sustainable, with no operational costs to the community.
Corporate Marketing Manager, LG Electronics Nigeria, Paul Mba, noted that the company is driven by the belief that “innovation must meet compassion.”
“We are proud to deliver not just water, but a sustainable solution powered by the same sun that shines over every Nigerian,” Mba explained. “Today, we do not just celebrate a borehole; we celebrate hope, health, and dignity restored.”
According to the company, Illah residents have long relied on unsafe water sources with many families sending their children to fetch water instead of school, while others battled waterborne diseases like cholera and typhoid.
President-General of Illah Development Union of Nigeria Worldwide, Anthony Nwegbu, commended the project, stating, “This borehole is a gift to our children and our children’s children. We are deeply grateful, and we pray that other organisations follow LG’s shining example.”
Meanwhile, Public Relations and CSR Manager, LG Electronics Nigeria, Moses Osime, pointed out that the company wants to be known not just for electronics but for meaningful impact.
“We don’t want to be seen only in showrooms and stores,” he said. “We want to be felt in classrooms, in health centres, and now, in this case, in every glass of clean water poured in Illah.”
The event also had in attendance the Manager of Fouani Nigeria Ltd Asaba Branch, Fadi Skaf; Community Leader Eugene Okondor; Secretary-General of IDUN, Celestine Obiokala; Publicity Secretary of IDUN, Anthony Wajama; and community leaders Ozo Njoagwani, Zeal Ugbode, Ekene Isiekwe, and Anita Okonta.
