The Ogun State Commissioner for Housing, Jagumolu Akande Omoniyi, has hailed the management of LG Electronics for prioritising investment in boosting access to safe and drinkable water in communities across the country.
Omoniyi, represented by the Senior Special Adviser to Gov. Dapo Abiodun on Housing, Kolawole Agemo, gave this commendation on Wednesday during the unveiling of the solar-powered borehole provided by LG Electronics for the residents of Ikija in Abeokuta, the state capital.
The Commissioner said that the kind gesture was in line with the conviction of the present administration that a lot of difference could be made in making life more meaningful for the people when the private sector collaborates with the government.
Omoniyi stated that “On behalf of the people of Ikija, I would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to LG Electronics for this generous donation. In a time when access to clean and safe water remains a pressing challenge for many communities, LG has not only recognised our need but has taken concrete action to meet it.
“This initiative is a testament to the power of corporate social responsibility, and it reminds us that when private organisations and communities work together, meaningful development happens.
“Clean water is life. This solar-powered borehole will significantly improve the daily lives of hundreds of families in Ikija. No longer will our mothers, children, and the elderly have to walk long distances or rely on unsafe water sources.
“The use of solar energy also makes this project environmentally friendly and sustainable, setting an example for the kind of development we should all aspire to. This project is in tandem with the agenda of the Dapo Abiodun-led administration in making life more abundant for the people of Ogun State.”
Omoniyi has therefore urged the benefiting community to take ownership of the water project and ensure its proper maintenance so as not to defeat the essence of the project.
The Commissioner called on other well-meaning Nigerians, multinational companies and other corporate organisations to emulate this good gesture of LG Electronics by partnering with the government to make life better for all.
In his welcome address, General Manager, Media Solution, TV Division, LG Electronics West Africa, Choongbae Seok, stated that the gift of the solar-powered borehole was in line with the corporate mission of the electronics company to make life good for the people.
Mr Seok said that both the solar-powered boreholes and the mobile laundry centre underscore LG’s commitment to leveraging innovative technology to strengthen community ties and enhance quality of life.
He added that “At its heart, the solar-powered borehole provides sustainable, reliable access to potable water, an essential daily resource. By harnessing renewable energy, the system operates independently of the power grid, ensuring 24/7 availability for the community.
“Complementing the borehole is a mobile laundry cabin, equipped with washing machines and
dryers powered by clean energy. Residents can use the facility free of charge from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Saturday, promoting hygiene, convenience, and social inclusion.
“By combining renewable energy with community service, we are setting a new benchmark for social impact projects in Ogun State. This initiative is part of a broader vision to empower communities through sustainable solutions, providing not only essential resources but also a renewed sense of pride, dignity, and possibility for the people of Abeokuta.”
Mr Seok said that the target of the company is to provide 50 solar-powered boreholes across the country and that the company has so far provided 11 since the project began.
He reiterated the commitment of the company to investing in initiatives that will make life more rewarding for the people.
The LG Electronics Head of Marketing, Paul Mba, also said that the kind gesture was born out of the desire of the company to look after the well-being of the people, saying that the company remains committed to adding value to the lives of Nigerians.
Mba also announced that the company has equally provided a solar-powered mobile laundry centre for the residents of Ikija and that for two months, the people should bring their clothes to wash for free.
The Chairman of the Community Development Association, Mr Taofeek Oladipupo, thanked the electronic company for the donation, pledging that the people will take ownership of the water project and ensure that it serves its purpose.
