LCCI tasks telecom operators, regulators on service quality

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry has called on telecom operators and regulators to prioritise delivering quality services to Nigerians, even as concerns grow over the recent hike in telecom tariffs.

In a statement issued on Monday, the LCCI’s Director-General, Dr Chinyere Almona, emphasised the critical role of telecommunications in the country’s economy and daily life, stressing that the sector must remain competitive while meeting consumer expectations.

“The recent hike in telecoms tariffs has sparked mixed reactions,” Almona said. “While this increase may provide financial relief for operators burdened by rising energy costs, inflation, currency depreciation, and the cost of network equipment, it risks placing additional strain on consumers, particularly those in lower-income brackets.”

The LCCI noted that despite the challenging operating environment for telecom providers, businesses and citizens deserve improved services and stronger regulatory oversight.

Almona stressed the need for more investment in critical digital infrastructure to support Nigeria’s economic growth and achieve the government’s ambition of a one-trillion-dollar economy.

“We need robust digital infrastructure to drive the much-needed digital revolution for growth and development. This infrastructure will foster innovation across all sectors of the Nigerian economy,” she said.

The LCCI DG also advocated automating regulatory processes, such as product licensing, permit obtaining, and certifications, to enhance business cost-effectiveness and government efficiency.

“Reducing human interfaces in regulatory services will support operational cost efficiency and bolster automation in government services,” she added.

The LCCI highlighted the resilience of the information and communications technology sector during the COVID-19 pandemic, urging the government to channel more funding and attention toward Nigeria’s digital and creative industries.

According to Almona, the ICT sector has been a driving force behind post-pandemic recovery and should be a central focus in rebasing Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product.

The LCCI emphasised that overcoming the challenges in the telecom sector is vital to empowering the digital economy and unlocking the country’s innovation potential.

Almona called for continuous dialogue among key stakeholders to ensure a “win-win scenario” for operators, regulators, and consumers.
