The Department of Sociology, Faculty of Social Sciences, Lagos State University (LASU), recently, held its maiden Social Work Day Colloquium at the Aderemi Makanjuola Lecture Theatre, LASU Main Campus, Ojo, bringing together scholars, practitioners, students and key stakeholders to deliberate on fostering unity and addressing societal divisions.
The colloquium, themed “Co-Building Hope and Harmony: A Harambee Call to Unite a Divided Society,” underscored the urgent need for collective action, social inclusion and shared responsibility in building a more cohesive and equitable society.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Professor Oseni Afisi, emphasised the importance of academic colloquia in promoting intellectual engagement and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
She described the theme as timely and significant, noting that social work extends beyond care giving to encompass collective responsibility, social inclusion, and cooperative efforts aimed at societal well-being.
Reaffirming management’s commitment to the programme, she highlighted its relevance to human development and national progress, while encouraging the continuation of such academic traditions as catalysts for improving lives and strengthening the economy.
