As part of efforts toward sustainable urban development, the Lagos State government has commissioned the Ikosi Fruit Market Biodigester Plant, a landmark project delivered in partnership with C40 Cities and supported by the UK International Development’s Climate Action Implementation Programme.
The launch is a significant milestone for the Ikosi community and demonstrates the Lagos State Government’s commitment to practical, visible climate action that directly benefits residents.
Speaking at the ceremony, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, highlighted that the plant is not just a structure, but a solution. “Every day, Ikosi Fruit Market generates tons of organic waste, fruit peels, vegetable trimmings, and unsold produce, which in the past clogged drains, created health risks, and released methane into the atmosphere.
Today, that waste will be converted into biogas for cooking and electricity, and nutrient-rich biofertiliser for local farmers. This is the circular economy in action,” the representative said.
The project underscores Lagos State’s ambition to build a city that is resilient, resource-efficient, and forward-looking, while improving sanitation, public health, and economic opportunities for market traders. Clean markets, the official noted, mean healthier communities, reduced disease transmission, and a dignified environment for residents.
Acknowledging the importance of collaboration and innovation, the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Environmental Services, Dr. Omobolaji Tajudeen, emphasized how partnerships can unlock practical solutions to long-standing waste challenges. Mr. Anthony Okoth, Regional Director for Africa at C40 Cities, reaffirmed his organisation’s commitment to positioning Lagos as a leading African city in climate action.
This biodigester plant demonstrates that Lagos is acting decisively, transforming environmental responsibility into economic value, and offering a replicable model for local solutions to global challenges.
The State Government pledged to continue building systems that protect public health, reduce emissions, and drive sustainable development across Lagos.
