Kano Assembly Withdraw Deputy Governor’s Impeachment Notice

The Kano State House of Assembly has officially withdrawn its notice of impeachment against former Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo.

New Telegraph reports that the development follows Abdulsalam’s voluntary resignation from office.

The withdrawal followed a motion by the Majority Leader, Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yangurasa, during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Jibril Isma’il, insisting that continuing to hold onto the matter after his resignation is worthless.

Speaking to journalists after the sitting, Hussaini explained that, in line with Order 3, Rule 6A, he decided to withdraw the motion following the voluntary resignation of the former deputy governor.

Hussaini stated, “We have withdrawn all charges against him, and the matter has been laid to rest. We will no longer pursue these offences because our role is limited to removing an official if found guilty. Since he has voluntarily resigned, how can we continue? We are not the EFCC or ICPC; our mandate has been fulfilled.”

This development comes after the Kano State House of Assembly had, on 5th March 2026, initiated impeachment proceedings against Aminu Abdulsalam over allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.

The action followed a petition from the Executive, urging the legislature to act against the Deputy Governor for alleged irregularities during his tenure as Commissioner for Local Government Affairs between 2023 and 2024.

While reading the petition, Lawan Hussaini Dala, the Majority Leader, noted that the impeachment notice was in accordance with Section 188 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).
